Soil Survey Availability

Soil Surveys show soil characteristics and capabilities and help people better understand soils and their use. An important tool for community planning, soil surveys are regularly requested by consultants, land use planners, and appraisers. This data is available online and from local NRCS and Soil Conservation District offices.

Online Formats Available

Available for 19 of New Jersey's 21 counties. Tabular data from old soil survey of Warren County is available on Soil Data Mart. Spatial data and updated tabular data for Warren is due to be added to online products this year.

• Web Soil Survey - View online maps, aerial photos, and interpretation reports for areas less than 10,000 acres - most up-to-date data
• Soil Data Mart - digital downloadable product for use in GIS (Geographic Information System) - tabular online interpretations available for areas up to a county size - most up-to-date data

Historical Soil Surveys

Historical information may be available from the NRCS or Soil Conservation District office that serves your county.

• Computer CD -Adobe Acrobat files (PDF format)
• Soil Searcher - SSURGO (Soil Survey Geographic Database) digital soils data layers and other GIS layers, such as digital ortho-photography, streams, and roads, as well as interpretation maps, can be generated from this product. A computer with a working CD drive is all you need to view this material.
• Paper copies - traditional, historical

The Soil Survey is published by the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service in cooperation with NJ Agricultural Experiment Station, Cook College, Rutgers, the State University; and the NJ Department of Agriculture, State Soil Conservation Committee.
