Southern
Pine Beetle in New Jersey
New Jersey’s trees are in trouble. Southern Pine Beetle, a bark beetle
smaller than a grain of rice, killed pines across our state’s southern forests.
In 2010 alone, the beetle destroyed 14,000 acres and continues to spread.
| Rutgers Cooperative Extension and New Jersey State Forestry Services
held sessions on Southern Pine Beetle (SFB) in New Jersey in July and
August of 2011. Information about the beetle’s history,
lifecycle, and current status in our state was presented. Foresters discussed how to
discourage the beetle from infesting forests, how to identify an
infestation, and effective suppression methods. Local SPB infestations were
toured. Sessions were hosted by the Extension offices listed below. |
