Conservation Security Program (CSP) Program Application Details for New Jersey
SIGN-UP EXTENDED TO MAY 30. New Jersey farmers in the
Lower Delaware
Watershed may apply for benefits through the Conservation Security
Program in 2008. Applications received between
April 18 and May 30 will be considered for funding.
The Lower Delaware
Watershed
(designated as
USGS
Cataloging Unit: 02040202) and contributing watersheds provide
drinking water, irrigation water for farms, nurseries and golf courses,
as well as processing water for industries to approximately 2 million
people in central New Jersey and
Pennsylvania. In addition, the Lower
Delaware River Basin is used for many recreational activities including
boating, fishing, and hiking. The basin provides habitat for many
aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
Major New Jersey waterways in the Lower Delaware River Basin include the Cooper
and Rancocas Rivers, and Big
Timber, Newton, Oldmans, Pennsauken, Pompeston, Raccoon, Repaupo,
and Woodbury Creeks.

operation location in the Lower Delaware Watershed must be verified on the computer mapping
system at their NRCS
office.
CSP applicants
operating in the Pennsylvania portion of the watershed will be
served by NRCS
in Pennsylvania.
Are you eligible to
participate in CSP?
You may be eligible to participate in the new Conservation Security Program if
you farm in the participating watershed and you can answer “yes” to the following questions that apply to your farm
operation.

Do you operate a farm in the watershed selected to participate in the program
this year?

Do you share in the risk of producing crops or livestock on this operation?
(Landlords who receive only cash payment for renting land are not eligible.)

Do you have control of some or all of the land you manage for the life of the
proposed 5- to 10-year contract period?

Are you applying nutrients by field according to current soil test?

Are you scouting for pests and using the information as a basis for applying
pesticides for at least a portion of your operation that is cropped?

Do you keep written records or documentation of your pasture management
activities by field for at least a portion of land that is currently pastured?

Do you rotate your
crops or use reduced tillage methods to improve the soil condition?
If you have answered “yes” to the
applicable questions, you may wish to consider contacting your local
NRCS Service Center to
find out what opportunities you may have through CSP.

Federal Register.
Self-Assessment Workbooks
The
Conservation Security Program uses a self-assessment workbook to help producers assess their
conservation stewardship and their eligibility for CSP
participation. All applicants are required to fill out a workbook prior to scheduling
an appointment at their local NRCS
Service Center.
The CSP Payment
Schedule can include three components:
- an annual stewardship component for
the base level of conservation treatment,
- an annual component for maintenance
of existing conservation practices, and
- an enhancement component for
exceptional conservation effort. Enhancement activities could include limited
pesticide applications, renewable energy generation, and widening existing
riparian forest buffers for restoring critical stream habitat.

Enhancement Activities
Activities on your operation that provide resource benefits above the minimum
program eligibility levels are known as Enhancement Activities in the
Conservation Security Program.

receive payments. Fourteen enhancements are available in New Jersey for 2008.
- Activity
Certification Sheets for each Enhancement must be filled out each year
before contract holder may request payments.
