NJ Envirothon
The annual New Jersey Envirothon is an exciting,
hands-on outdoor competition that takes place in May each year in New Jersey.
Teams of high school students prepare throughout the academic year with their
advisors, studying soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and environmental issues
under the guidance of conservation partnership staff.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service works closely with the New Jersey
Association of Conservation Districts (NJACD), a lead sponsor of the competition
and other environmental education
activities in New Jersey. To find out more about the Envirothon in New Jersey, contact

2011 NJ Envirothon Information
Congratulations to Marine Academy of Technology and
Environmental Science Team #1 of Ocean County, winners of the 2011 NJ
Envirothon. Team Scores for the event and individual stations can be found at
the NJ Envirothon website.
New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher today announced, for
the second year in a row, students from the Marine Academy of Technology and
Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Manahawkin were the winners of the New Jersey
Envirothon, held Saturday May 7 at Camp Glen Gray in Mahwah. This team will
represent New Jersey in the 2011 Canon Envirothon at Mount Allison University in
Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada in July.
The students were the overall winners of the New Jersey Envirothon, competing
against 38 other teams on knowledge of natural resources-related topics,
including soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife ecology and a current
environmental issue. This year’s Envirothon theme was “Salt and Fresh Water
Estuaries.” “Each team spent the school year preparing for the Envirothon by
studying environmental, science and natural resources topics, so every student
came away a winner with all the knowledge they gained leading up to and
including the competition,” said Secretary Fisher. “We urge these bright,
motivated students to continue this course of study and consider careers in
agriculture and natural resources-related fields.”
Each of the MATES team members received $1,000 scholarships from the New
Jersey Association of Conservation Districts, $2,000 scholarships from Richard
Stockton State College and $1,000 scholarships from Applied and Health Sciences
at Kean University. Hascha, Predi, and Sullivan also were members of last year’s
winning team.
The Envirothon is sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture,
State Soil Conservation Committee; United States Department of Agriculture,
Natural Resources Conservation Service; New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection; and, Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
Envirothon Sponsorship
Sponsors are always welcome. Funding for this wonderful program is limited
and we encourage corporate, non-profit and individual sponsorship. Sponsors can
participate by donating money, services or products such as lunch, tents, tarps,
etc. For information on becoming a
Sponsor visit the
main NJ Envirothon Page.
Envirothon Background
The Envirothon competition was developed in the 1980's to
encourage young people to learn more about natural resources and their
management, and to consider going on to careers in the environmental field. In
addition to test questions based on examination of soils, trees, fish, skeletal
samples, and other natural resource materials, the teams must give a verbal
presentation regarding an environmental issue. New Jersey's top conservation
leaders serve as judges for this testing station, which is designed to enhance
teamwork as well as critical thinking and verbal presentation skills.
This outdoor event is
sponsored annually by a coalition of organizations including
NJACD, the State
Soil Conservation Committee of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the
Natural Resources Conservation Service, New Jersey's 16 Soil Conservation
Districts, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and Rutgers
Cooperative Extension. Natural resource professionals from these organizations
work together throughout the year to develop resource material study guides,
local training sessions and the actual testing stations at the event.
Congratulations to the 2010 Envirothon Participants!
